Hemp Fiber

Hemp Plant Sunn Hemp, fiber-producing plant, member of the pea family, native to India. Sunn hemp plants reach a height of 2.4 m (8 ft) and produce large, yellow, pealike flowers. Also called Madras or Bombay hemp, sunn hemp is one of the fibers used earliest by humans. It is widely used in India, where it often takes the place of jute and is used for fishnets, paper, and fabrics. These annual shrubs are also grown for hay and as green manure crops on many of the islands of the Pacific and in the Caribbean.
