FIBC Bulk Bag Safe Working Load & Lifting Loop Check

A bag rated 1,000 kg is filled by volume. A denser product reaches the rating well before the bag is full.

Bag Body & rating
m
m
m

Height of product in the body, not the height of the empty bag.

kg

The rated load printed on the bag label.

:1

The factor printed on the label beside the SWL. The US top lift test for UN flexible IBCs fills the bag to 6 times its maximum net mass (49 CFR 178.812).

Product & Lift Fill and handling
kg/m³

Settled (tapped) density, not particle density.

no.
kN

Tested breaking load of one complete loop (both legs together).

°

0 when the loops hang straight on forklift tines or a lifting frame; larger when they are gathered onto one hook.

Safety Factor the Loops Give

— :1

Loop breaking strength over the load they carry at this fill and angle

Fill volume is the rectangular box of base x fill height. A filled U-panel or circular bag bulges, and a product settles in transit, so the real volume and mass differ; weigh a trial bag before relying on the result. Loops are assumed to share the load equally, which holds only when every loop is lifted at once as the bag was designed. A bag with fewer loops in use, or loops gathered onto one hook, is outside its tested condition unless the label says otherwise. The safety factor here concerns the lifting loops only: seams, the body fabric, the base and the discharge spout each carry load too. In the US, a UN flexible IBC design type must pass a top lift test filled to six times its maximum net mass, held clear of the floor for five minutes with no loss of contents (49 CFR 178.812). **This is a decision-support estimate only.** Never fill beyond the SWL on the label, never stand under a suspended bag, and follow the maker's handling instructions and your local lifting rules.
