Linear yellowing is a simplification of an autocatalytic process — degradation products themselves accelerate further degradation, so real b* curves bend upward and this understates long storage. Much greige yellowing is also reversible in scouring and bleaching, so the b* figure predicts what arrives at the dyehouse rather than what survives it; the ones that matter are the fractions that do not clear, particularly on pale shades and optically brightened whites. Fabric stored against a damp wall or under a leaking roof ages on its own schedule and no environmental average describes it.
