Rope on a Reel: Reel Capacity, Layers, Turns, Wound Diameter for an Order & Rope Mass

A reel holds rope by volume. Double the rope diameter and the same reel holds a quarter of the length.

Capacity treats the wound rope as filling square cells one rope diameter on a side across the annulus between the barrel and the allowed wound diameter, then applies your winding efficiency: a neat, tightly wound reel can exceed the square ideal as rope beds into the layer below, a loose one falls short. Layers and turns are the whole numbers of rope diameters that fit radially and across the traverse. The flange, barrel, traverse and freeboard are measured; the efficiency is best set from a reel you have wound and measured. **For a winch or crane drum, the drum design, fleet angle and the rope maker's minimum drum diameter apply; this tool only measures.**
