Incorporated by reference into 46 CFR 160.174-17(f) - Coast Guard approval requirements for immersion suits - which makes the named edition part of US federal law rather than a recommendation. The regulation cites the 1985 edition; the publisher has revised the standard since, so following the current edition can leave you technically up to date and legally wrong. A free copy of the incorporated edition is public because the law requires it to be readable.
What to watch for
Withdrawn by ASTM in 2023. A laboratory cannot report to a withdrawn method, so a specification still calling for it needs a live replacement agreed before testing, not after.
