GOTS
GOTS Global Organic Textile Standard

What this standard is for
Where it is used
The certification a buyer most often means when a specification says "organic", and the one a consumer is most likely to have seen on a label.
Why it matters
It certifies the processing rather than the farming: the fibre arrives already certified organic under an agricultural scheme, and GOTS governs everything that happens to it afterwards. A mill cannot satisfy it by buying the right fibre.
What to watch for
Documents are in circulation marked 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2, and they are not successive versions of this standard. The standard is Version 7.0, released March 2023 and fully implemented 1 March 2024. Version 7.2 is the separately numbered Manual for the Implementation of GOTS. Someone citing "GOTS 7.2" is citing the manual, and a mill certified to 7.0 is not thereby out of date. The publisher's own website is down. Every path on global-standard.org returns the same 236-byte 404, to a browser and to anything else alike, so this is not a block that a different client would get past. The link recorded here reaches GOTS material that is still served; it is a stopgap, not the canonical home of the document.
