ZDHC MMCF Guidelines ZDHC Man-Made Cellulosic Fibre Guidelines

Applies to the production of viscose, modal, lyocell and the other man-made cellulosics, where the environmental burden sits in the pulping and spinning chemistry rather than in the finished fibre. A programme requirement rather than a test method. Conformance is demonstrated through the ZDHC platform - chemical inventories, wastewater results and supplier assessments - rather than by a single certificate on a product.

What this standard is for

Why it matters

Viscose production recovers and re-uses process chemistry, so how well a plant closes that loop is the whole environmental question about the fibre - and it is invisible in any test of the fibre itself.

What to watch for

The publisher is inconsistent about the current version and this record follows their link rather than their templates. Their own templates are labelled for MMCF V3.0, while the guidelines link on the same site delivers Version 2.2, dated August 2023. The edition recorded is what the link actually serves, which is what a reader following it will be holding. Republishing the values, as opposed to citing the list, is governed by ZDHC's IP licensing and is not currently possible: their licensing programme is under development, and its stated terms allow licensed non-participants "policy and alignment statements only - no performance or quantitative claims". A limit value is a quantitative claim. That is why this register describes what the list governs and sends you to ZDHC for the numbers.
