Equivalents

Body Number Equivalence Deviation
ASTM ASTM D1422 NEQ Parallel standard, not an adoption of the ISO text under ISO/IEC Guide 21. Measures the same property by a comparable method; results should not be assumed interchangeable. Confirm which standard the buyer specifies. ASTM D1422 uses the untwist-retwist principle rather than direct counting, which is a different measurement route to the same property.
CEN EN ISO 2061 IDT CEN adopts the standard unchanged under this designation, which is the name it is cited by across the European Union. Recorded so that a specification written in European terms reaches the document this register already holds.

Verification coverage

Checked against ASTM. Not yet checked: AATCC, BIS, SAC, JIS, EN, DIN — an absent row here does not mean no equivalent exists.

What this standard is for

Where it is used

Yarn specifications where handle, strength or fabric appearance depend on twist, and in disputes about why a fabric feels wrong.

Why it matters

Twist governs strength, softness and how a knitted fabric behaves — under-twisted yarn is weak, over-twisted yarn gives spirality and a harsh handle. It is one of the few yarn parameters a buyer can feel in the finished garment.

What to watch for

Direct counting and untwist-retwist do not always give the same figure on the same yarn, so state which method the specification means.
