WRAP 12 Principles

Certifies a facility against twelve principles: compliance with laws and workplace regulations; prohibition of forced labour; prohibition of child labour; prohibition of harassment and abuse; compensation and benefits; hours of work; prohibition of discrimination; health and safety; freedom of association and collective bargaining; environment; customs compliance; and security. An audit programme rather than a published product or material standard. What is assessed is the facility and its labour conditions, and the output is a certificate or rating on the site.

What this standard is for

Where it is used

One of the most widely held facility certifications in apparel and footwear manufacturing, and often the first one a factory obtains.

Why it matters

Two of the twelve are not about labour at all - customs compliance and security - which is unusual among social standards and reflects the programme's origins in supply chain integrity as much as in worker welfare. A buyer treating a WRAP certificate as purely a labour credential is reading less than it says.

What to watch for

No version is published, so a certificate cannot be dated by its designation and two issued years apart look identical on paper. The standard is short enough that the twelve principles above are the citation; there is no separate numbered document to check them against.
