Yarn Spinning Formulas

Formulas used for yarn spinning production including various yarn numbering system conversions.

textile formula

Common Spinning Formulas

Grams per Meter 0.5905 / Ne
Grams per Yard 0.54 / Ne
Tex den x .11 = 1000/Nm = Mic/25.4
Ne Nm/1.693
DRAFT (feed weight in g/m) / (delivery weight in g/m)
DRAFT Tex (feed)/Tex(delivery)
DRAFT delivery roll surface speed/feed roll surface speed
No. of hanks delivered by m/c (Length delivered in m/min)/1.605grams per meter = 0.5905/Ne

Carding

Production in kgs / hr ( L x 1.0936 x 60 x effy ) / (hank (Ne) x 36 x 840 x 2.2045)

L – delivery speed in m/min
effy- efficiency
Ne – English count ( number of 840 yards in one pound)
840 – constant
2.2045- to convert from lbs to kilograms

Production in kgs / hr (L x Ktex x 60 x effy) / ( 1000 )

L – delivery speed in m/min
Ktex- sliver count in Ktex (kilotex)
effy – efficiency
1000- to convert to kilograms from grams

Production in kgs / 8 hrs (0.2836 x L x effy) / (Ne)

L – delivery speed in m/min
effy – efficiency
Ne – English count

Production / 8 hrs (Hank x Nd) /( Ne x 2.2045)

Hank = no of hank (840 yards)delivered by the machine
Nd = no of deliveries
Ne = hank of the material

Total draft in card (feed weight in g/m) / (sliver weight in g/m)

Drawframe

Break draft surface speed of 2nd roller / surface speed of back roller
Main draft surface speed of 1st roller / surface speed of 2nd( middle) roller
Total draft surface speed of delivery roller / surface of feed roller
Production in kgs / 8 hrs (0.2836 x L x effy x Nd) / (Ne)

L – delivery speed in m/min
effy – efficiency
Ne – english count
Nd – No of delvieries

Production in kgs / hr (FRD x FRrpm x 3.14 x 60 x effy x Nd) / (Ne x 840 x 36 x 2.2045)

FRD – front roller dia in inches
FRrpm – front roller rpm
effy – efficiency
Ne – Sliver hank
Nd – number of deliveries

Speedframe & Ringframe

Twist / Inch (TPI) Spindle speed / FRS

FRS – front roller surface speed in inches/mi

FRS = FRrpm x 3.14 x FRD FRS – Front roller surface speed

FRD – front roller diamete

T.P.I T.M. x sqrt(count or hank)

T.M. – Twist multiplier
sqrt – square root

Production in kgs / 8 hrs (7.2 x SS x effy) / (TPI x Ne x 1000)

SS – spindle speed

Spindle speed m/min x TPI x 39.37
Hank delivered spindle speed / ( tpi x 62.89)
Ring traveller speed in m/sec (spindle speed x ring dia in mm x 3.14) / (60 x 1000)

Winding

Production in kgs / 8 hrs (0.2836 x L x effy x Nd) / (Ne)

L – delivery speed in m/min
effy – efficiency
Ne – english count
Nd – No of delvieries

Production in kgs / hr ( L x 1.0936 x 60 x effy ) / (hank (Ne) x 36 x 840 x 2.2045)

L – delivery speed in m/min
effy- efficiency
Ne – English count ( number of 840 yards in one pound)
840 – constant
2.2045- to convert from lbs to kilograms

  1. sir,
    in Ring frame Production formula
    No of hanks Delivery = Spindle speed/ ( TPI*62.89)

    pls Explain 62.89 convertion

    1. Textile School

Here’s the logic behind the constant:

      1 hank = 840 yards = 30,240 inches

      So:

      Hanks delivered =

      Spindle Speed
      ————-
      TPI × 30,240

To make this practical for mill calculations (e.g., per hour, per shift), and factoring in the delivery efficiency, traveler lag, and drafting geometry, the empirical value 62.89 is introduced.

      This value includes:
      – Conversion of inches to hanks
      – Machine mechanical efficiency (~85%)
      – Practical delivery rate

So, it’s a composite constant based on:
      – Theoretical conversion + Machine practical factors

  2. WHEN I GET DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FR SPEED BY TACHOMETER AND TO MACHINE DISPLAY THAN WHAT A PROBLEM I SUFFER IN MY MACHINE.
IS IT BY MECHANICAL SIDE OR ELECTRICAL SIDE?
EX. IN TACHOMETER FR SPEED IS 280
IN MACHINE DISPLAYED FR SPEED 250.

    Sir,
Im very new to spinning and also unknown person to spinning. but due to covid 19 ,im joining spinning unit . as supervisor. plz let me know the formulaes.

    1. Production :
      Grams/Spdl/Shift
      = 7.2 * Spdl. Speed/TPI * Count
      Where 7.2
      = 8 * 60 * 1000 * 1.0936/840 * 39.37 * 2.2046

    dear sir,

I am training supervisor in the textile industry spinning plant, so plz tell me calculation ring frame, auto corner, cheese winding and (TFO) with calculation formula

  5. It is base value
If one 840 yard yarn weighs one pound it will one count
Similarly if one pound of yarn give 840 yards of 49 times it will be 40 s count ne

36 in the calculation is wrong as you are converting meters into yards already by multiplying meters/m with 1.09.

    1. That is the question!. That is how someone was able to order the same weight of yarn agai and n!

I believe that was as much as a bobbin held back then, so it was a standard measurement. No one understands why!!

So if you were able tp get 16 hanks out of a pound, it was said to be “16 weight”, or size 16, That weight of yarn was a way for a customer to order the same weight of yarn again. Which is why we have 8 and 16 and 24 weight of yarns today.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply the same to all fibers — each has its own standard measurement.

At least, it seems plausible to me!

  7. Dear Sir
I want and I you about profit and cost.

Pls can you explains me about quality formulas example (60×60×40)/(60×60×40)=61
    Pls explain me?

If I know what quality I want use on looms how can I know production cost?

    Best regards
