The specimen is wrapped around a cylindrical drum and a copper ball, carrying 11 tungsten-carbide snagging pins on its surface, is placed against the drum. A motor rotates the drum so the pins tumble across the specimen; after a set number of revolutions the specimen is removed and examined in a rating cabinet for snagged yarns or fibres, and the degree of snagging is graded.
