ISO 105-C06:2010 Textiles — Tests for colour fastness — Part C06: Colour fastness to domestic and commercial laundering

Answers one question a buyer asks constantly: will this fabric’s colour survive being washed the way the end customer will wash it. The result is a set of grey-scale grades for how much the shade changed and how much it stained the fabrics beside it.

What this standard is for

Where it is used

Named in most European and North American retailer test protocols for washable apparel and home textiles, and in the buyer specifications that reference them. It is the routine colour-fastness test on a garment order, run at the lab stage and often again on shipment samples.

Why it matters

A shade change or a staining grade below the buyer’s floor is a rejection, and rejections at shipment stage are absorbed by the supplier. The commercial exposure is not the retest fee, it is the discount negotiated on goods already made.

What to watch for

AATCC TM61 is accelerated and is not the same test, though it is routinely treated as though it were: the liquor ratio and steel ball count differ, and results do not transfer without agreement. GB/T 3921 is aligned to ISO 105-C10 rather than C06, so confirm which test a Chinese buyer is actually specifying before quoting against it.
