ASTM D5430 Standard Test Methods for Visually Inspecting and Grading Fabrics
The four-point system, written down. Assigns penalty points to fabric defects by size, and sets how many points per unit area a roll may carry and still be accepted.

What this standard is for
Where it is used
Fabric incoming inspection at cutting rooms and fabric mills, and in the fabric acceptance clause of supply contracts.
Why it matters
Fabric defects become cutting losses, and cutting losses become a consumption overrun nobody budgeted. A points threshold in the contract is what makes a bad roll returnable rather than absorbed.
What to watch for
Point systems vary — four-point is common but not universal, and the same roll grades differently under another. Name the system and the threshold together.
Calculators that implement this
- Failed Fabric Roll Disposition Cost: Downgrade, Rework, Cut Around or Return
- Knit Tube Slitting: Open Width, Trim Loss & Marker Fit
- Knitting Fault Locator: Repeat Spacing to Feeders and Needles
- Loom Stop Cause Pareto, Lost Metres & Annual Cost
- Weft Bow & Skew Against Limits, Straightener Range and Cutting Loss
