ISO 1833-11 Textiles — Quantitative chemical analysis — Part 11: Mixtures of certain cellulose fibres with certain other fibres (method using sulfuric acid)
Cellulose fibres dissolved in sulfuric acid, leaving polyester, polypropylene and other acid-resistant synthetics. The standard method for proving the synthetic content of a cotton-polyester blend, which is most of the world sheeting and shirting market. The residue is weighed and corrected by the factor d that the standard gives for that fibre in that reagent; the dissolved component is the difference. Identify the fibres by microscopy first - the method assumes you already know which two you have.
