See what it looks like

Humidification is an energy line to one manager and an efficiency figure to another. The setpoint is usually neither decision, but an inheritance.

The Department

What it makes and what an hour of it is worth

Nameplate output of the department the humidity plant serves

Selling price less variable cost, on the yarn this department makes

Hours the department runs and the humidity plant with it

Utilities and the Moisture Question

What holding a setpoint costs, and whether any of the water is sold

Delivered cost including demand charges attributable to the plant

Treated water delivered to the plant, including softening

Selling price per kilogram, used only for the moisture question below

Leave at zero wherever yarn changes hands at a commercial regain - the standard exists so that water is not sold, and assuming otherwise books a claim as a revenue. Raise it only for business genuinely invoiced on actual weight

Operating Points the Mill Has Actually Run

One row per setpoint you have real figures for - a summer and a winter setting, a season before and after a change, a trial fortnight. This sheet compares points; it will not invent one. Efficiency and waste are what the department recorded at that humidity, not what a handbook says it should have.

How to read this sheet

No relationship between humidity and breakage is modelled, and that is deliberate. There is no general transfer function - it differs by count, by fibre, by machine and by season - so every row must be an operating point the department genuinely ran, with the efficiency it genuinely recorded. Type in a setpoint you have never run and the sheet will compare a measurement with a wish. The moisture line is the one to be careful with. Where yarn is sold at a commercial regain, the standard exists precisely so that water is not traded, and booking moisture as revenue there records a claim rather than an earning, which is why the field defaults to zero: raise it only for business actually invoiced on delivered weight, and note that the optimum moves when you do - on the seeded mill it shifts from 62 percent to 68 the moment moisture is paid for, which tells you how much of that answer is yarn and how much is water. Comparing recorded periods also compares everything else that differed between them: a damp fortnight in the monsoon is not a controlled trial against a dry one in February, and mix, count, cotton lot and operator all move underneath. Treat a difference smaller than the noise in your own daily efficiency as no difference at all. Nothing here covers the capital case - a plant that cannot reach the best setpoint on the worst day of the year is a sizing question, not a setpoint one - nor the effects that are not measured in kilograms: mould, corrosion, worker comfort and the fire load of a very dry shed are all real and none of them are on this sheet.
