Calender

A calender passes fabric through the nip of heated, heavily loaded rollers to flatten, compact and give it a smooth or glazed surface, or to emboss a pattern with an engraved roller. It is a dry finishing step after dyeing and drying, and differs from a compactor in pressing the surface rather than controlling shrinkage. Calenders are compared on working width, roller count and type, nip pressure and roller temperature.
